Blackford Capital Employee Spotlight – Kelly Potter

I do love musical theatre! I’ve seen over 40 shows and was even in Drama Club in high school, which gave me some great memories.

Right now, my theme song would be “Purpose” from Avenue Q—a hilarious (and slightly inappropriate) puppet musical. The song is about a young adult trying to find direction in a world where everyone else seems to have it figured out.

For me, it reflects this stage of life where I’m discovering a new sense of purpose. With my kids getting older, I’ve had the opportunity to return to school, start a new career, and focus on what’s next for me. It’s an exciting—and sometimes uncertain—but really meaningful chapter.

I’ve laughed a lot more here than I would have guessed—there are some really funny people on this team! But I think I laughed the hardest during the inflatable version of Hungry Hungry Hippos at our TXIM internal celebration. The combination of total ridiculousness and very intense competition made me crack up.

Easy—100% pizza. I even got my own pizza oven for Christmas a few years ago, and we make homemade pizza almost every week. I love pizza… probably more than I should.

One thing I’ve found valuable in both raising my family and in a professional setting is anticipating needs. With small children, they often can’t express what they need with words—it shows up in behaviors you learn to recognize and interpret. I used this same skill during my time in senior care as well. Being empathetic and perceptive to others’ needs is definitely a learned skill, and it turns out it’s just as valuable in an office setting.

This is a tough one. I feel like we are fairly typical – but we do take our family games a little more seriously than most. We’re big fans of escape rooms, and that has definitely carried over into our home life.

Each year, my husband and I plan an elaborate game for my oldest daughter and her friends. We’ve been doing it for the past six years, and it’s become something they all look forward to. We usually start brainstorming at least six months in advance! The games include puzzles, riddles, secret codes, physical challenges, and teamwork—basically a full production. It might seem a little over the top, but it’s created some really great memories for all of us.

If someone from Blackford were on a survival show, I’d have to go with one of the interns surviving the longest.  There’s something about being younger—you’re not as used to the comforts of everyday life and maybe a little more adaptable. Plus, you can’t ignore the advantage of youth!
